Birth Support Services
Consultation:
Prenatal Visits:
Your Body, Your Choice.
Note: Additional prenatal visits can be requested for an extra fee and are subject to availability.
Emotional Check-Ins:
These are one or two less formal visits each about an hour long where we can focus more purposefully on what you are feeling. We can sit down with a cup of tea, go for a walk or do something else that makes you feel emotionally safe. These conversations help us build trust and explore what you're going through on the path to parenthood. Some of this work can be done in the prenatal sessions, but I like to make some extra room just for your experience without you being flooded with information. If you want to do one emotional check in and your partner wants to do the other, that can be beneficial as well.
Birth Support:
I will be on call for you from 37 weeks until you give birth. When you do go into labour I will talk you through early labour and help you determine when to go to the hospital/birth centre or call in the midwife. As you transition into active labour, I will meet you at your house or at your chosen birth location. I will help you during each contraction and hold space for your experience whatever that may be. I will support you in advocating for yourself and I will be there for you and your partner throughout your entire birth adventure. After you have given birth, I will stay to care for you and protect the golden hours of bonding immediately postpartum. I will leave approximately two hours after your baby is born, once I feel that everyone is settled and well looked after.

The Difference
Between Pain and Suffering Is Empowerment
* Note: This is not an exhaustive list and each individual's needs will dictate the kind of care I provide. If you would like to read further into the benefits of a birth doula, there is a very good article here:
-
Help you advocate for yourself with your health care providers.
-
Be a translator for the medical terms about pregnancy and birth.
-
Offer reassurance when things feel overwhelming.
-
Suggest helpful books on the topics that you may be interested in.
-
Help you find evidence based information about different birth options.
-
Help you prepare mentally, emotionally and physically for labour.
-
Have honest conversations about things that may scare, overwhelm or intimidate you.
-
Help you create a birth plan that you feel good about.

While I am actively in support of you, I will be available to answer questions and provide emotional reassurance via text or phone call between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm on weekdays. Once you reach 37 weeks, then you may contact me at any time of day. This is a way for us to stay connected and for me to provide continuous support and reassurance. Note: It is important that you call rather than text once you are in labour so that I can arrive in time to support you.

What a Birth Doula Is Not
-
A person who provides emotional, physical and informational care to you during your pregnancy and birth.
-
Someone who can bring the focus back to the birther and remind both them and their partner to advocate for what they want.
-
A support person who is educated about birth and who will help you ask the right questions and explore the answers with you.
-
A resource for your partner as well as the birther.
-
Someone who can help you problem solve creatively.
-
Someone who can help your labour partner/s feel supportive and included in the birth process.
-
A human who will adequately resource themselves so they can provide you with the best support possible.
-
A replacement for your partner or any other labour companion that you want at your birth.
-
Someone who can make decisions for you or talk to a medical provider on your behalf.
-
A health care provider or trained medical professional such as a nurse, doctor or midwife.
-
Someone who will always have the answers.
-
Someone who will give you advice based on their personal opinions.
-
Someone you need to take responsibility for because they are there to support you not the other way around.
This is approximately a 1 hour meeting free of charge where we can get to know each other and decide if we would like to work together. We'll go over a set of intake questions that are designed to help this process flow smoothly. I approach my consultations with curiosity towards your experience. I am there to listen and to help figure out what you need. This is the time to ask questions. If a question requires specific or detailed answers, then I can also offer more information during our prenatal visits.
Ideally, we will have two prenatal visits before you give birth that last between 2-3 hours each. In these appointments, we get to deep-dive into important information about pregnancy, birth and babies. We go over the practical application of that information, explore what your personal desires are for birth and parenthood, and discuss how I will support you in those choices. These visits give me the opportunity to help you create a birth and postpartum plan that you feel great about. When you go into labour, I want you to feel confident in yourself and the people around you.
Email:
This visit happens in the first ten days after your birth and will be 1-2 hours long. It is a check in visit to discuss the events of the birth and your feelings surrounding the experience. Whether your labour went exactly as planned or had a few twists and turns along the way, birth is a monumental experience and will most often bring up strong emotions. Becoming a new parent can also bring up its fair share of feelings and the postpartum visit is an opportunity for you to explore them in a non-judgmental environment. This visit will also address some practical concerns like feeding, changing, and sleep for your baby.
*Additional Prenatal Visits are $80 each for two hours.
*Additional Emotional Check-Ins are $30 each for one hour.
